about
Byzantium is a song I co-wrote with composer Richard Williams. It is a story of exile in a counter factual world where the Byzantine empire never declined, and is instead spreading and invading Northern countries. As a result of this refugees are fleeing to Africa. In 'Byzantium', we see one such refugee.
lyrics
I’ve been cast adrift from all I’ve known
With only memories to call my own
I’m still reeling from those fiery skies
With images emblazoned on my mind
I’ve retreated back inside myself
Yet even there no solace I have felt
Scared to hope there might be something more
That I’ll find my way to kinder shores
Byzantium, I understand
The heartbreak of a war torn land
Watch Islands of identities
Dissolving into stormy seas
Try to clear my mind and look ahead
But I’m uncertain of the path to tread
And if I find a place to make a start
Will they accept me with an open heart?
With their blend of playfulness and graduate-level instrumentation, Dorcha deftly prove that improvisational zeal and conservatory-level precision aren't mutually exclusive. Bandcamp Album of the Day Nov 16, 2020
Inspired by John Carpenter’s 1974 film “Dark Star,” the beautifully moody songs on this LP present a voyage into the unknown. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 21, 2021
